Dear Parents and Students,

Another school year is quickly approaching.  In looking forward to the 2009-2010 school year the staff have diligently been preparing and planning to improve Hanover High School.  Hanover High School is continuously seeking to meet our mission of “providing a positive learning environment where all are challenged to achieve their potential.

The specific educational needs have certainly changed over time as the United States — and much of the world —has transitioned from an industrial-based economy built around manufacturing to an information-based economy. Our education system must examine the changes it will need to make in order to prepare students for the changing world in which we live and work.
Regardless of the many changes taking place within our world, it has not changed the importance of appropriately challenging instruction in the core subjects of English language arts (literacy), math, history and science.   Of these core subjects I believe student literacy is the key.  If students cannot read and write, they are crippled in all other academic areas.  Moreover, people who cannot read with confidence and efficiency are socioeconomically at risk in most adult roles as consumers, as citizens, and as parents.

Literacy-To improve literacy students will be writing more across the curriculum.  Students will continue to be required to be reading over the summer for their Language Arts classes and additional reading is being required in some AP Courses.  A new SRT (Student Resource Time) has been added in which part of the time will be designated to reading for leisure for all students, and an additional STAR assessment will be given to all students to monitor their reading levels throughout their high school years.

Career Prep.-Not only are we looking to improve student literacy but we are also looking to provide career training and preparation.  A new career class has been added that is offered to more students.  This class will help students explore a variety of careers based on their interest and look at the requirements for various careers.  In addition two new courses are being offered.  The first is a Culinary Arts class to explore this growing industry in our service society.  A second course being offered is an Emergency Medical Service Class.  This class will prepare students for State Certification as First Responders which could lead to a career in Emergency Medial Service such as EMT or Paramedic Science.

Freshman Orientation-Something new for freshman this year that has been added is a required Freshman Orientation.  This five hour preparation day for freshman will provide helpful tools and insights into High School life; the changes and challenges students will face in comparison to middle school.  This program will help incoming ninth grade students get off on the right foot as they embark on their next four years of education.   Freshman Orientation will be held August 14th from 9-2.  More details will be arriving to the homes through the mail in the upcoming days.

Facility Upgrades-Students will also notice some physical changes to the building.  The boys and girls physical education locker rooms have undergone a facelift (completely gutted out and remodeled), additional safety entrance added by the high school, the wrestling room is being remodeled; infrastructure added for future technology upgrades in the classroom, and work has begun on a new track, soccer, and softball fields.

I look forward to a great year with students, faculty, and community members.

Sincerely,

Robert L. McRae
Principal, Hanover Central High School
