    This course is intended to give an understanding and appreciation of our American literary heritage. First semester emphasis is on the chronological development of literature from colonial times to the end of the 19th century.  In the second semester, the course will explore principal American writers from 1860-present and will provide necessary historical/social background for understanding. Process writing based on literary works and historical research will be the central composition modes. Text used is Holt Elements of Literature. The main pieces of literature we will read are: The Crucible, The Great Gatsby, Their Eyes Were Watching God, and The Road. Honors students will also read The Awakening.
